Live commentary for sports event. Odd Question. Need some advice.

So I need to record live commentary at a sporting event. I have 2 commentators. I need to know exactly what I would need for this. What would be the best way to go about this? What equipment, and software would I need to get it down pro style? Any help would be appreciated.

Simple, either record into a laptop or a stand-alone digital recorder like a Zoom/Edirol or Tascam unit.

For mics, are these talent seen on-camera or simply voice recording? If it's simply voice recording, I highly recommend the Coles Lip Mic. They are a peculiar microphone made exactly for this, I rented one a couple of times and it's like a portable VO booth. The talent literally takes this mic and puts it up against their lip and all you will hear will be their voices, not the noise all around them. If they are on camera, the mic can still be used but it looks a bit strange, although I see BBC shows all of the time that use it.

Good luck,

depends on the quality you want but a simple podcasting solution would probably be the answer for you too.

i wouldnt say getting audience noise is a bad thing thoguh. it can really help bring an energy to a broadcast.

I agree, but in professional recording, that would be recorded on a separate microphone and channel and mixed in for proper levels. Relying on picking it up on your talent's microphone's would not be a wise choice for the obvious reasons. Same reasons that dialogue crowd scenes are shot with the audiences miming action, the BG sound and ambient is put in during post. Your number one job as a sound mixer is to make sure that the talent is heard plainly and clearly. Everything else is recorded separately but many people aren't aware of that.

Dance/club scenes are the same way, you would crack up if you were on a film set and saw all of the talent miming other than the actors with lines.

an EV RE50b does a great job in loud enviornments if you don't have the $$ for the coles. I am sure the other is better, but I love my RE50.
