Live Capture with FCP?

Hi everyone.

Just was discussing in another thread about capturing from hvx through various software to external hard drive via powerbook g4.

Thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=84602

The author said "You can do live capture with final cut, though. If your external setup is fast enough, you should be able to go HVX -->FCP --> External HDD "

does anyone know how this works?

Thanks.

Here is a bare minimum that we did with this scenario so if you can meet these specs go for it! We bought an 867 mgz G4 with 1 gig RAM. This is the minimum that FCP5.1 will install on. I also bought one of those candy orange LaCie FW400 portable drives, 80 gigs with 5400 rpm speed. I open FCP and set the scratch disk for that, then set the device control for Non-Controllable. We fire up an HVX200 in 720pn mode and hit record on the camera, and then hit Capture Now on the powerbook. I've captured up to an hour at a time of 720HD this way. Make sure your running the latest OS. I've also heard that you can capture through QuickTime although I haven't tried this. Good Luck.

I would spring for a a better hard drive (7200 RPM and probably around 320GB).

You can buy an internal drive like this for like $90-100 and then put it an an external enclosure which would be another $50-100. Most external cases have 2 FW ports on them so you can 'daisy chain' devices together. (1 cord from camera to HD and then 1 cord from HD to computer)
