Live capture Straight to FCP

Is there a way to hook your camera via firewire to your computer and capture a shot straight to the hard drive bypassing tape altogether?

Not that I know of, but there is third-party software out there that allows it. What type of project would you use the method you just explained for?

I was thinking events, with a camera and a powerbook, making my own giant p2 card. Also for time lapse being able to setup and capture for weeks.

you connect the camera to the computer, turn on the camera you can hit capture and capture the image.

I tried but it says the camera must be in vtr mode.

Try setting to non-controllable device for firewire controls.

Make sure your Capture Now settings in the prefs are not limited to 30 minutes, which I think is the default. That and what Scott said...
