Live Capture on a Mac without FCP

FYI,

Did you know you don't have to fool with FCP to capture live footage from your Panny cameras? QTPro Player will do it for you!

Connect your DVX or HVX, turn it on.

Then open QuickTime Pro Player. Go to the prefs, set things as you like in the Recording section. This is the "Preferences" under the QuickTime menu, NOT the "QuickTime Preferences"! They are two different animules!

Now, you can capture, save your files, and no need to wait on FCP. Unless you want to do all sorts of variable frame rates and such, then you'll need to use FCP. But for straight, live captures, this works great.

One caviat for the HVX users, in my test, I find it only gives a good image when in 1080i60 mode, only.

Thats interesting. But I am wondering why a direct capture in FCP is any harder? Especially as I can use waveform and vectorscopes. Maybe I missed your point...

Quicktime pro = 30$

FCP = 1300$

but ive had many dropped frames doing the QT capture in just DV on my MBP

I was just throwing out some triva. I've actually done long captures in QT Pro Player that were just fine. I'd rather use FCP, more control over the set up. But I've used QT Pro Player just fine once or twice in a pinch.

Ya, i think i had something wrong, or something else was disturing it BenB, i wasnt in the mood to trouble shoot. :P i was just checking it out while waiting on the Universal Binary Final Cut Crossgrade stuff.

So does "live capture" in FCP avoid the importing drudgery from tape in a similar manner to the PC program DV Rack?
