Hi All,

I've just got my dvx100a and I have a question:
is very cheaper DV camcorder from Panasonic like(Panasonic PVDV53) is good enough to read/write MiniDV cassettes from/to Computer for NLE? Or there can be any DV models?

Thanks in advance.
Alex.

id go with the panasonic PV-DV103 you can get it from circuitcity.com

not all little DV cameras will read the DVX timecode. its important that they do for logging and capture. the PV-DV103 does. and you can use its battery charger and battery too.. although the little battery from it would probably only last like 20 min. im not sure if the PVDV53 rads the timecode or not.. youd have to try it out to see.

hmm. it was my understanding that any min-dv camera will read the time-codes because the whole genius of the dvx-100 is that the panasonic engineers made it so it writes 24p or 24pa to the tape in a way where the camera treats it just as mini-dv.

i have used various sony cameras and decks. my main one is a $400 camera from tweeter.

i could have gotten an even cheaper one but i thought it might be handy to have a half decent one and my wife likes to use that one on vacations.

So, is it 100% true, that any DV camcorders should work propery in simple order read/write an each other, or at least there needs to be one company for both?

As IAL stated, not all cheapy camcorders will read the DVX100 timecode. You need to make sure the camcorder will read and transfer the timecode over firewire when you digitize your tapes. The camcorder acting a deck doesn't have to be the same brand as the camcorder that lays down the time code, but you do have to confirm it correctly reads and transfers DVX timecode.

you could test it out or ask around to see if anyone has gone through the headache for you. but the one i mentioned works for sure. alot of us have it. its a nice little family cam, and works well as a capture/output deck. also any panasonic camera wil be able to make use of the same batteries and charger as your DVX. to my current knowledge, none of the new panasonic PV-GS series of camcorders will work with DVX timecode. which is why alot of us have the now discontinued older PV-DV103 model. because it works.. and is a pani so we can swap batteries and use its charger as well.

anyway if you dont like that camera, just take a DVX tape with you to the store, and try running it in the cameras your looking to buy. if it reads the timecode you should be all set. youll likely have to go through the menu to be sure its displaying timecode for the test. ..just dont ever run that tape in your DVX again.. :)

I run a JVC GRD507U for capture and it reads the time codes fine. Bought it used for 190, but that series of JVC has an engineering flaw. I have to beat it (literally) to get it to work sometimes. But when it works, it works fine.

Its prob best to stick to soemthing you know reads the timecodes to ensure accurate capture.

sony cams are ok for using as decks also. it doesnt have to be a Panny to read DVX tapes. I use a sony cam. trv70. works great. As a matterof fact, when you shoot in squez mode on DVX, and watch the footage on the Sony, the sony actually letter boxes and Anamorphically stretches the DVX footage on it s LCD screen/viewfinder so its the propper apect ratio, and it can read the user bits or whatever they are called that the DVX writes to the tape, like shutter speed, Fstop etc.

.... Amazing

There was a post a few days ago mentioning that the Panasonic PV-GS series (their cheapest ones) cameras can't read DVX100A timecode. I was looking to purchase the GS9 as a transfer deck into FCP, but after reading the post I cancelled the purchase. But....I just got off the phone with a technical support guy from Panasonic Industrial who said the the GS9 WON'T display the timecode in the camera but it WILL transfer it into your NLE because its encoded in the bitstream. So, as a transfer deck, it sounds like the GS9 will do the trick. Does anyone see any other problem with that?

thanks

I have decide to lift this article up, b/c I have got some new question, which is:
Does it matter for such camcorder, if the actually shot was done in 24p mode? Will it be readable?
