Little distorted sound coming from my Oktava 012 ??

I've noticed a little funny buzzing/bass noise when I bump the boom pole coming from the mic. I thought it might have been my headphones, but nope I was right it's something in the mic or cable. I'll put up a audio sample later tonight, but thought I'd start off asking if anyone here has had this problem with the Oktava mk012 mic or the cable they offer ?

It almost sounds like a lose connection inside....

It's brand new with a little MK012WS Windscreen and bought one of their XLR cables

Could be the normal bass thump of handling noise, coming through strong enough to clip. Do you have the mic in a proper shockmount or just a standard mic clip? Do you have a high-pass filter on the mic input and if so is it engaged? What do the meters on your mixer or camera show when you "bump the pole?" Do they hit full scale?

Yes in a shock mount (DIY) and not sure if the cheap rubber bands I'm using could or would cause something like this. This is dry audio into the cam, DVX100b. It doesn't sound like a thump, it's more like a distorted fuzzy noise. I'm at work now, I'll try and put up a clip later.

There's more to the design of an effective shock mount than meets the eye. Such things as resonance of the suspension, etc. have to be factored in. Could be the rubbers "singing" due to having a resonance in the audio range. Remember making "guitar" as a kid by stringing rubber bands across a cigar box?

And the Oktava is a pretty sensitive mic. I love it, but it definitely picks up more handling noise than my AT-897.

Well I really couldn't find a shock mount for it, so I made one.

It actually works very well and didn't notice that noise tonight. However I added the -10db cap to the Oktava, which gave me more mounting room. So yes I think you're right about the rubber bands singing. I'm going to upload the footage from my party tomorrow and see what's the deal....

I really love the sound this little mic puts out !!

BTW the Sound Room is an A++++ company and would definitely buy from them again.

Check out the Rycote Invision series of mounts, the number 7 mount is suggested for the Oktava ... about $75 and works terrific.

Twocik, do you use a limiter in your signal chain?
Some (electronic) limiters could be heard as "singing".
And sure the Invision 7 is a terrific mount. Soon I will introduce an ultralight windshield for that same mount so it could be used outdoors too.

I too first added the -10 cap to the 012 but soon I found out that with a little practice I could use it without.

I'm still new to audio, but not to my knowledge.

MK012 - XLR cable - Dvx100b

Thanks I'll take a look.
