Litepanels LED lights

I am really considering getting one of those LED lightpanel lights but geez that price tag of $785 with a $150 mail in rebate has me questioning if its worth it. I have heard its a very nice light to have and its used a lot in a variety of TV shows and films. I noticed someone in the DIY section of this site that made a homemade LED ring light and I am wondering how that would compare to the high dollar Litepanel light. Then again when you think about the light...its like wow $785 for an on camera light! So at the moment I am in decisive of what I am going to do.
 
If you're handy, you can build one quite easily really.

The $785 ones cost that much basically because they look nice, and most people aren't handy. To them, there's no choice.
