For battery operation, the LitePanel is pretty excellent. The DV kit runs off the same batteries your camera does. Excellent for on-camera light. I think they are filling a niche very well right now. Very efficient, lightweight and pleasing. Not that controllable, but great as a soft source. I'm imagining they'll hold their value pretty well too (until competitors spring up), so you could buy and then sell after using them for a while without taking too much of a hit.
Dedo also makes a 200w HMI which can run off Anton Bauers, but you are talking serious money.
There are also some HMI on-camera lights that are battery-powered and fairly bright. And sun guns with battery belts.
There are also car headlights, or par-cans or kinoflos powered off marine batteries w/ inverters.
A few more details on what kinds of shoots you will do would be helpful in discussing the best solution.
I am very interested in those Litepanels lights. They make a special mount for our cameras too. You may have to contact the folks at Litepanels to get the part number or it may include a universal type mount in the kit. I am considering getting one of these lights pretty soon.
This is something that also might work, and would be quite a bit cheaper.
Take one of these and attach it to a china ball or diffusion of some kind.
Could probably create a usable rig for less than $50. These battery rechargable spotlights are pretty powerful these days. Will probably get the job done.
That might be good if your shooting down a dark alley or trying to light a dark field but I wouldnt use that big ol spotlight to shoot a interview with. On a funny note, I saw a guy a few months ago on a shoot here in Philly with one of those lights! He was shooting with a Canon GL-1. Camera in one hand, and hand held spotlight in the other hand! He looked like a hot mess trynig to balance both! LOL!
I have been lurking around for a while and have read this post and others with great interest.
My company, Zylight, has been working on the next generation of LED lights. We will be announcing our product at NAB in April. If you guys can wait until then, I think you'll be surprised. Our beta testers have been so far......
Our light will be available for sale starting April 24th. That is the first day of show and they will be available on our website as well as NAB in various kits. The light can be powered from any Anton Bauer Powertap as well as AC. Other adapters will be available (Cigarette plug, 4 pin XLR) for other sources.
Functionality will be far and above anything that is out there now. On our website, you can sign up for our newsletter that will keep you informed as we get closer to April. Thanks and stay tuned.

Through Rain And Heat And 15 Hour Days, These Little Dynamos Really Hold Up.
I see they are running a special price on them for $635 ($150 rebate on DV kit). That sounds like a good price compared to $1,195.95 but you don't hardly get anything in terms of accesories for the $785 ($635 after rebate). So you may have to end up paying over a thousand for one of these little lights that will come with a bunch of extras.
Either way, I would buy a litepanel dv kit because of its look. Especially when you're doing camera work in public or weddings...but im a gadget head so...
I agree with you I am sort of a gadget head too! I DO do research various equipment thouroughly before i make purchases though. I have been very interested in the litepanels since I first heard about them. I remember someone from that company came on DVXuser sometime last year and was looking for people to test out their product before it head the market. I was hoping to be one of those people but the next thing I knew they had released them to the stores!
We will not have the option for running our light off of a DV battery. Our first product will support Anton Bauer PowerTap/D-Tap connectors, battery belts, cigarette lighters and AC only.
Re-designed www.Zylight.com website with pictures will be up this week as well as our newsletter. Again, thanks for your interest and I look forward to giving you a demo at NAB.
