Lion or Snow Leopard ?

I just installed FCPX 10.0.3 on a fresh install of Lion. And have been running it on Snow Leopard since the FCPX release.
SO far FCPX seems snappier on the new Lion drive than the Snow Leopard one. However, the Lion drive was a fresh install, and SNow leopard hasn't been reinstalled for a while.

For me the biggest test is seeing if Apple fixed the memory leak issue in FCPX. It's especially evident on Lion, which is a huge memory hog onto itself.
So far I haven't seen any spinning beach balls that many reported, which much seemed due to the memory leak and Lion. Just a note, I am running FCPX on a 2006 2.66 (x4) 1,1 MacPro with 16GB or RAM and an upgraded Radeon 5770HD card. All of my media is shot AVCHD, but I convert it to ProRes LT (done with ClipWrap as FCPX doesn't allow for ProResLT encode for some reason) for editing. Even though my system isn't fast by todays standards, I try to do as much on the front end to prevent issues while working in the program.

One thing to I found with with FCPX is to work a certain way. As it seems to be picky.
For starters, I ONLY have the one Event and it's related Projects that I am currently working on. All other Events and Projects are moved to another folder (via Event Manager X)where FCPX can't see them. Moving these projects I think is key, as ALL of the content (Projects and Events) use up memory in the program and can definitely cause issues. So I recommend only running 1 job that you are working on at a time.

Also, my other system has both FCS and FCPX, Motion 5, and Compressor 4 on it. But the Lion system does not. The only FCS apps I installed on Lion was DVD Studio Pro, and Soundtrack Pro.

Of course I also run maintenance on Preferences and the such.

So far I love FCPX, that is as long as it behaves. In which it seems that the latest update has greatly improved stability.

Thank you!

I'm running Snow Leopard, thinking in Lion...
Probably a clean OS install will be better.

That's the next thing I'm going to try on my Snow Leopard system as well.
Going to reinstall SNow Leopard on a new drive. As the one that Snow leopard's currently on might be having some slight issues.
The drive shows up as healthy, but it's taking too long to do certain tasks, and it sounds like the drive is always working on something.

BTW, what might be the best ay to reinstall?
Would you clone the drive, I would cone both MAC SNow Leopard, and my Windows partition, and then do a fresh clean install of Snow Leopard. Then migrate over programs and info after the fact?

Just trying to avoid reinstalling programs on Snow Leopard, although it should be easier now, because I did just this with my Lion Drive anyway.
The biggest time consuming thing would be to install the FCPS suite and FCPX, Motion 5, and Compressor 4 again.
I currently don't have the FCS suite on Lion but on the Snow Leopard drive only. And the FCS suite takes quite a while to install.

This is a very interesting topic, please let me know if you get any updates.
would love to know why Lion might be much better.
Thanks

One major advantage for some for going for Lion over Snow Leopard, is that you can ONLY get AV out when using Lion.
This is because Lion has the code needed for FCPX to process an output to another monitor, which Snow Leopard is lacking.

AV out is NOT available when you are running Snow Leopard. As a matter fo fact when you have FCPX 10.0.3 installed on a Snow leopard computer, AV out won't even show up as an option.

This scenario would apply when one wants to use professional broadcast monitoring using cards from AJA, Black Magic, Matrox etc.

I have FCPX installed on 2 separate drives, one using Lion and the other using Snow Leopard. And I have a Black Magic Intensity Pro card, and Radeon 5770HD card in my system.
I can only use my Intensity Pro Card when suing Lion. If I wanted to use my second monitor for viewer reference in Snow Leopard, I have to run dual display out of my Radeon 5770HD card, and send my viewer to a secondary monitor. It works, but it won't be professional grade output, like my Intensity Pro card would be.
