Lightworks to go open source

I think it will be embraced by the filmmaking community and expand really fast in that market. I have never used it but I suspect it is well designed and solid. I like the idea of a free package that covers the basic production and an upgrade path for more demanding productions where budget can cover it.

P.S. I hope they don't make the mistake to make film production frame rates an addon. I read something about that on one of their existing brochures.

I hope it won't be a poor lite version with fairly essential (and expensive) add-ons required to make it viable for most of us. I take some comfort from the first press email which said:

"Our intention is to make Lightworks open source as full-featured and powerful as possible without any unnecessary restrictions. Out of the box, Lightworks will handle many codecs and effects, and will allow you to capture, edit and export as you would with any other NLE. Naturally, there are some restrictions on what we can open source, and we will offer third-party components through the online store."

Recently had an email update from Editshare: a free download of the new Lightworks should be available on November 29th to those who have registered an interest. Currently, Win 7 (32-bit or 64-bit) or win XP (32-bit) platform is supported, OSX and Linux won't be available until late 2011.

It's available today! Downloading now...

I've just received the mail....but the page isn't working for me....I guess the servers are going like crazyyyyy....hahaha

Well,

It's tricky navigating the interface so far... My matrox avi didn't import (says media offline) and my DNxHD footage isn't recognized. Gonna be interesting to say the least...

It appears the DNxHD support is one of the extra cost options. Along with Red and ProRes and AVC Intra....several more.
According to their site, the store doesn't open until January.

It crashes on me all the time, at random. No warning, just a stall then --> poof! Gone. It's supposed to support P2 without extra cost, right? Anyone figure out how to import it? I point to the folder structure and it shows everything separately but doesn't recognize the video format.

So far, I'm not too impressed. Hopefully things will improve.

I installed it to my D: drive and was surprised to find it only put the uninstaller there. No apps, no files. So I uninstall it and re-install using the default paths. This time I get files and a desktop icon but everytime I try to start it it does some startup UI and then crashes. Assuming it will work on Win7-64bit I'd guess there is something about my system it doesn't like. Normally I'd dig in and figure this out, but that's a lot of work I'm not keen on doing.

I got mine working. Win 7 32 bit i5 laptop. A couple of bugs that were fixed via solutions on the lightworks forum. I wasn't able to load AVCHD (HMC) but I was able to load and edit some 7D footage. Bummer about the 3d disabled. I hope this is truly open source as those limitations should be overcome...

Anyone know if/how this supports AVCHD? I see AVC Intra and Quicktime in the specs, but not AVCHD specifically.

-cp

I tried this software last night, unfortunately its not working for me.It loads up giving the false impression that its going to play ball........ But then the screen goes blank ,just staring back at me with a smug look on its face.My
computer meets all of the specs including the special codecs provided via a link from the main site.Oh well its back to Vegas Ppro 10 for me,daresay i won,t be on my own on this one.

Luckily I was able to get mine working with minimal hickups in time to demo it for an editing class I'm teaching. It's pretty cool. What I like best about it is it's pedigree. It's been a real editors tool for a long time. The only thing so far that bugs me is a lack of a built in title program. I have Vegas on my laptop, and access to FCP and premiere at work for free, but I think I'm going to give this one a chance...
