Lightsabers on DVX100B: Undercrank?

Hey guys,

I am going to do a dorky little short with my girls that will involve light sabers. (about 5-7 minutes long.)

I am wanting to be safe, so I was thinking of undercranking the 100B so that would allow me to move a little more slowly with the prop sabers so my kids don't end up with a black eye (not by me, but by each other), and then speeding it up in post.

So I was just wondering if undercranking would be recommended for this (1/12th slow shutter at 24fps), or if I should just shoot at 24FPS, or possbily 30 or 60i.

Keep in mind that this isn't some major feature. My eldest daughter has taken an interst in video/film production, so I want to nuture that. My two daughters are 9 and 8.

I know.. it sounds totally dorky, and it's been done a thousand times already, but I just thought I would ask.

Thanks in Advance!
:dankk2:

I say shoot it regular. I've done saber fights before and once you add the effect and the sounds, people won't notice if it's a little slow. Just my two cents.

Thanks Director..

I was kinda figuring that.. and I am having the girls practice the "12 & 6" position becuase that seems to be what all non-sword trained actors seem to do besides a lot of twirling around..

I will be doing a practice run with them, and will try it both ways. I did a little practice last night.. but the sabers were all white, so that makes it a little tough to follow in AE. this practice will have their "fully constructed" light sabers.

I know it's hard to prevent this.. I just don't want it to look totally stupid.. :)

Any other advice appreciated.

One of the things I did was wrap the blades with stripes of red duct tape. Then, I used a florescent orange for the tip. Makes it much easier to see. Good luck!

kinda doing the same thing.

The sabers are fully colored in what they will be in post. and then I am adding a few enhancements.

Thanks for the tip :)

Oh light sabers.... everyone in the filmmaking biz has sometime done a lightsaber flick...I did mine with 15 years and it was really fun.

I also did the orange tip and red and blue tape thing, it really helped in post.

BTW, don't do like me, I hit my oponent twice in his head and he wasn't happy about it....

here is the link to the video, (take in mind that it was shot 4-5 years ago and finished 3 years ago...).

yes... we learned a lot with this project, this project was the one that sparkled that fire that now burns inside me and all in this forum!

So.... I may have to thanks George (and all the crew and cast!) for the new star wars episodes, because when I was a kid I loved them (the first and the second, for the third one I had already enjoyed the original three and you can imagine the rest...)! I think that star wars has been the starting point for a lot of filmmakers.

And I have to thank to all the amazing people that post tutorials online and help starteers with their projects (ohh damn greenscreenn, how much I hated you when I was using a handycam...) . And DVXuser is one of those places!
