Hey guys. I going to have to shoot some car interiors pretty soon. I need to figure out a way to have a light rig on set to generate lightning flashes. How would I do this cheaply?

"shutters" in front of a large light are my preferred method. Another cheap effect I used on a film is to get a group (~5-10) flashes or cameras w/ flashes and have them go off at about the same time. It produces a nice strong flicker like effect. Youcan scour thrift stores for old 110 camera that sell for $2 ea.

If you have a source for 220 power available, (there are 110v wirefeed welders that might work) Find someone with an arc welder, and a hunk of metal. Don't look at the light Carol Ann.
