lightning a fireplace scene

Hello all,

Can someone share some info on how to emulate a fireplace flicker light without any costing equipment?

Thanks in advance

bounce a red, yellow, and orange light off of a silver reflector. You must crinkle and wave the reflector fast enough to make the light flicker onto whatever surface your shooting. I've shot a film with this effect with decent results.

You could put a small fan on the sheets of reflective color material to give it a little more 'random' motion, and save having to actually manually manipulate it while shooting...

Gel the light orange or yellow. Fill up a water bottle two thirds and swish it in front of the light for effect.

Thanks a lot for the inputs. I think I'm going to try every method mentioned and figure out what's best :)

Some of those methods will generate noise, so you also need to consider how your audio will be recorded.

It's a "no dialog" movie and that particular scene will only have the fireplace sound which will be post produced, so no hassles in that department :)
