Lighting Workshops in NYC/Toronto?

I'm in the Toronto area and have considered putting something together like this if there was enough interest. I'm currently putting a training program together for "studio-style lighting techniques" for 35mm still photography of people/models. That of course is an excellent primer to lighting for movies, and with some changes I could easily do something similar for shooting video on 35mm. I do have primary experience working as DOP on several short indie films using 35mm adapters with PL and SLR lenses, but for the last couple years been focusing on 35mm DSLR work.

Per Holmes is planning a series of Hollywood Camera workshops in many cites across the world in 2011. Check out his site and email him for more information.

Leaftors, (leafs and raptors? - haha)

If you or anyone else in the Toronto area are interested in getting together with some my lighting gear (ARRI's, Lowel, mixed bag of other stuff) and my cameras (or your own too), and whatever other gear we can round up let's put together our own "workshop" where we can share some of what we know, and actually try things out on camera. I can organize it so there is an agenda in advance so we have an idea of what we would be doing.

I've always wanted to do something like this. It's a great way to get out of the house to network and socialize, plus meet people in the area who share the same interests.

If you guys do get anything organized in Toronto, let me know. I'd be happy to hop across the border and finally put my NEXUS card to use. I would offer to bring gear, but anything beyond my 7D makes it difficult to cross the border.

That would be great. I don't know much I'm just a freshman in college.

Cool idea - we've tried this a couple of times but it always died out due to no interest (the actual meeting up part).

Shoot me a PM if this ends up working out guys...happy to come on out,

We are going to start offering a variety of classes at AbelCineTech. We are under construction right now, but in March we will have a dedicated training space. At that point we would like to have classes in lighting as well as many others. Check out our site here - http://training.abelcine.com - and stay tuned. If anyone, Patryk included, would like to hold classes in our space in NYC please PM me.

In Toronto LIFT has a series of workshops for filmmaking. I'm a member but it has been years since I have been so who knows what digital workshops they are offering. When I was there the lighting classes were very introductory but still helpful and plus it's great to meet some other local filmmakers in person.

I would love to take part in another lighting workshop/meet always good learn more, as I know I still have a ways to go.

p.s. I have a set of Ianaro red heads (hot and large I know but free), and some crummy tungston fixtures, and an array of low end cam's and gear. Though I'm not really the person to teach I would love to help out anyway I could.

PM me if you would like

have a good one

There is an 'artist run center for independent filmmakers' in Montreal. < www.mainfilm.qc.ca > There might be an equivalent operation in Toronto.

Every season they offer different courses that alternate between French and English. For example for spring they are offering:

I believe the summer they will be offering another lighting course in English. The courses are reasonably priced and they usually have teachers with a certain amount of experience already. The courses are open to members as well as non-members.

There is also a great rental department that has lighting (kino / tungsten), cameras and lenses (Bolex, Aaton, Arri, Panasonic) as well as sound ( Nagra, Sound Devices) at very, very reasonable prices.

Cheers,

Roderick Chen
