Lighting the Face

I know that the use of different forms of lighting is majorly dependent on the look the film maker is trying to achieve, but I was wondering what type of lights are typically used/not used in order to lighten one's face?

Not an easy question to answer simply.

Most any lights can be used my Carlsbad brethren. From the incadescent warm 3200K to the Flouroescent to the mighty 5600K HMI's and then even natural sunlight and a bouncecard

Each of them provide a totally different look and vibe and color correcting and gelling them can also alter the end look and feel.

Lighting the face can be done with any of these.

1. Do you have a particular vision in mind ?

I'm thinking of a warm and soft type of lighting that is bright enough however to set off the 80% zebra setting so I can get proper facial exposure.

Warm and Soft

This can be achieved with most any type of lighting. Bounce/Fill and/or Diffusion is going to be important for that Softness you require.

Brightness will be determined on how much light you have, specifcally watts.

Any grabs of examples of what you'd like to pull off? Maybe then we can best direct you in the exact method's used (HMI, Tungsten, Flouro ..)

Top 3 picks off the top of my head would be: (not in any order)

Kinoflo 4 foot 4 bank
650 fresnell with diffusion
Anything with a Chimera on it

The Chimera is one of my favorites for faces. I find it wraps just a little nicer (for my liking) compared to a kino. A bigger light (2k) through really heavy diffusion, like muslin even, adds a nice fill source to a face.
