Lighting terminology question

I have been reading this book called DSLR Cinema and it uses a few terms I am not familiar with.

Is a 3/4 light one that is set at an angle that is not directly towards or to the side of the subject?

What is the different between motivated and unmotivated light? (if there is a thing)

What is practical and non-practical light? (also, if there is such a thing)

1) Yes. Set at about a 45-degree angle.

2) Motivated light is light which appears to be coming from an object in the scene -- a lamp, a window, a candle, etc. Unmotivated light seems to come from nowhere in particular and can be confusing in a scene.

3) A practical is a lamp or other light visible in a scene.
