Lighting & Sound

I have a HVX 200 and have made a couple of small videos. Nothing to fancy yet. I am now interested in purchasing a lighting kit for interviews and a wireless mic system for interviews as well as some field work. I have a budget of 1,500. Is this possible to pull off in this price range. JB

small lighting kit : $400

1-2 lav wireless - $1000

look around B&H for the lavs, and then try to buy used(e-bay)

lighting go purely E-bay.....this is general lighting, not spots, fresnels, gels, etc.....personally I suggest:

I only know about the lighting really and am guestimating on sound(on cheap end)...I'm no sound guy(I like to bring in a pro for this)...but that light kit along with four 1/2 CT orange gels, some black wrap, and some clothepins(or C-47's if you wanna get grippy about it) will get you atleast well lit on closes outside(don't use the gels outside) and medium sized rooms indoors(make sure indoor light bulbs are old school, not cfl's, and use the gels)....buy a couple good books like the five C's of Cinematography, Cinematography(by malkewicz{sp?}), and possibly "8mm/16mm film making" if you can find a copy....oh yeah...and always set your white balance manually.

I'll give a couple shortcuts to...cause I'm like that...compose subjects with triangles. minimize the space above subjects heads when possible. create a light at one strength on one side, and aproximately half that strength(perhaps a touch less hen half) on the other side to create some shadow and depth. if you get more specific lighting add eye light for twinkle, and hair light for more depth....cheat looks so that you always see the eyes and facial expressions.
