Lighting Solutions Forest

Hi there guys,

I have a shoot coming up that's going to be set in a pine tree forest. Now I have no money for actual proper lights as they'll require a generator which I just can't afford. Now I was just wondering about ways to maximise light in this situation? Reflectors etc? I'm not too sure of cost-effecient solutions.

Thanks any help will be appreciated :)

the stock answer most people here give is a lot of reflectors, white boards, and possibly even big mirrors to focus the sunlight where you want it to go. but as for the talent and maybe even other overexposed parts like trees etc if there's a lot of contrast you should be sure to have some diffusion material as well like silks or sheets of some kind to maybe prop over the actors out of frame in order to reduce harsh light or overexposure but this depends on location if there's a lot of canopies overhead you can shoot in shade etc...

Agree with above. Put the talent in sunlight dappled shade and add a 12X12 of Ultrabounce or even white Griff or mus. Moves a lot of soft flattering light. And some shiny boards. If there's too much direct sun on them put the sun at the talent's back and fill with a reflector off to the side. Did all this last week and works fine.

slondon just curious can you post (or private message) me pics or footage of your shoot last week. really wanting to see how some of this looks as I too am interested in shooting such a scene in the medium term future

I don't have many and it's a feature and I can't publish them publicly. I'll send you a couple privately.

What a 12 x 12's? Can you provide a link.

these are scrims, i.e. they diffuse light rather than bounce it and go over the subject but it's just an idea what 12x12 and large sizes will look like, same principle just a white bounce material instead of diffusion material
