Lighting SetuP - VIP Interview

This description is of a setup I did yesterday for a one-shot interview style shoot. I don't have fancy graphics, so I'll link to my stills from the setup.

Background - Black fabric material similar to felt. Placed on background stands and rods about 5 feet behind talent.

Key - Lowel Rifa 88 (36"x36") 1kw placed camera right at 4 o' clock position. Subject usually wears glasses so I set up for that.

Fill - 4x4 Foamcore on a C-Stand at camera left 9 o'clock position.

Hair - Lowel DP light with barn doors pinched down. Placed at 1 o'clock position. Light had 1 full CTB, 1 ND3, and one frost diffusion sheet. Blue was chosen to give a slight color to talent's white hair. Background was chosen to give maximum separation, and because the video would likely be headed to the web, it will compress beautifully.

I did NOT crush the blacks in post. In fact, I shrunk the contrast just a bit to lift the shadows on the face. This has not been color graded in any way.

Not too bad. He could maybe use a single net or cutter for his shirt, but really, I think you definitely nailed what you were going for.

Watch your c-stands though! Always keep your knuckle on the right side so that it'll tighten down on itself. I think on the piece of foam core in front of the softbox, one of those knuckles was facing the wrong way.

Anyways. How is the EX and DVX footage cutting together?

I don't have ANY controls for the softbox, and I had to do the setup before he arrived as you saw in the photos. Tricy for me at my novice level. This my first ever three-point for recording.

Good catch on th C-stand. I knew that but don't handle them enough for it to be second nature.

The DVX is a LOT noisier. I didn't expect that. I am going to have to denoise it to get it to cut more cleanly.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Looks good. Toning down the shirt would have helped, but I don't think it's too bad.

Even after doing this for years, it still amazes me how much you have to set up even for the simplest of shots.

How did the cart idea work out for the CRT? What's that you ended up using, some sort of rolling computer desk?

When we discussed the shoot a day prior, he told me he would be wearing a blue shirt. I had told him absolutely no white shirts as his skin is really hard to be successful with.

The cart worked out terrific. It was in the room already and I just used it. I let him have it as a self monitor, but I don't think he used it. It's actually a small open podium that we use for some lectures in that room. The formal podium is very large and has a telestrator on it.
