Lighting set up, white balancing

Hello,

I just several light setups with my pregnant wife in my living room with the ursa mini pro, a aputure LS1V(daylight) boucing or shooting through some unbleached muslin (with CTO/CTS/without). But I made a mistake I autowhitebalanced each light setup.
Which makes the results look very different colorwise. So gladly I learned this at home.

So should I never whitebalance on sets, or just once at the first take? Do you use fixed white balance kelvin temperatures. What is the best way to approach this without a greycard?

Thanks!

I shot video, prores :/
But next time ill try to autowhitebalance , see what it balanced too and write it down in case I need to change it back manually for the next shots of a scene.

How is auto white balance supposed to work?

You (under 5500k lights) point your camera at your model wearing a red jumpsuit standing on an orange background and the camera guesses 3000kelvin - but we know the correct setting is 5500k

You should either point your camera at the keylight and WB off that. (stop down or reflect the key off a greycard or both) or just know your key and set the camera to that value?

I dont know when I would AWB (if I could - I use a fixed CT camera Slog FS7)

Maybe if my key was the setting sun Or I was in a particularly putrid flouro factory?

Of course the muslin is a choice.. so many with a 5500k source would warm the light by shooting through muslin or 1/8 straw gel.. but they would keep the camera on 55k becuase they want the image 'warm' - they would not use the AWB to bring that warmth out of the picture.. they just put it in!

I don't think he meant he was running the camera in a continuous auto white mode(like a consumer camera or cell phone would do), just that he white balanced(auto white balance) for the source instead of running a pre-set(3200, 5600, etc).
