Lighting Question

hey guys,

I wanted to get cheap lights to film on DV. I've used film lights but I know I don't need THAT much strong lighting so I went to home depot to see if i could build some lights. Only problem is I don't have any stands or anything.

anyways any suggestions or websites that sell cheap lights or tell u how to build cheap lights. I just want some stands. to put my lights on. everything i've found so far is over 700 dollars.

you can get light stands for well under 700 dollars. 100 bucks or even less will get you an OK light stand, but you'll want to have some sand bags to weight it down so it doesn't tip. Home Depot lights will work, but you have to remember that the color temparatures often aren't consistant, and the lights are also very hard to control.

I've had some pretty good luck finding baby moles, midgets, (etc.) on Ebay ranging from $125-175 per unit. Obviously they are used...some in better shape than others. Also right now there are quite a few desisti fresnels listed on Ebay. Even a cheap used fresnel is going give you a lot more control and will be color correct, opposed to the shop stuff at Home Depot. You can usually pick up baby stands for less than $80 or beefy babys for around $100-$125. Good luck.

Go to ebay and look for a company called Amvona. They have great c-stands auctions. You may have to bid on a few to get a price you like (remember the shipping is about 26$ on them so combine that in the final price) but I have picked them up under 60$ total.

They are by no means pro film lights and you'll need to rig modifiers yourself as they cant take softboxes or barn doors, but FilmTools (whom I dont recommend and only use if I have to pick somethingup on a Saturday because EVS is closed on Saturdays. The guys at FilmTools really put the TOOL in film equipment supply.) has a cheap set of three lights that are rated up to 600w each and the set comes with lights and stands.

Again, this is NOT a great set to light a film with BY ITSELF. I grabbed a set as I already have a 4 light set of Arris and I got these because for about $200 I got three extra lights to use for background atmosphere or whatever else.

Cheap and throws alot of light. It's up to you to figure out how to wrangle that light in a usable way.

I bought a cheap starter set by Paterson. Intergris I think is the label on them. They're plastic heads with 500 watt 3,200 K bulbs, 2 umbrellas, and 2 stands. So far they work, lol.
The price I think was $300. 1 umbrella has the silver reflective and the other is white diffusion material.
I got em in Portland, Oregon @ CameraWorld and I think they are part of Ritz Camera.

the rostronics/britek stuff is great bang for the buck. i have one of the 600w/1200w lights with a 32" softbox. i think i paid $200 for the whole thing with a stand. i use it a lot and it works fine. the dvx user discount is 10%. just enter "dvxuser" in the coupon code when ordering.

yea i got the Dual 600/1200 Kit, with Softboxes, stands, trandslucent umbrella, and Barndoors.

like 500 alltogether. i hope they are good quality.

But then again, i bought a 300W Arri Fresnel today too, and its defective... so it goes back to B&H Tomorow.
