lighting outdoors in the dark, scary woods.

Hey guys,

I'm shooting this horror feature soon in the woods of MD and I'm looking for lighting suggestions/advice. I already have your basic arri 3-key lighting kit, but I sure I'll need a lot lights or mabe something more powerful. Also keep in mind that I'll be shooting on the HVX200.

Thanks for your time guys

Light for separation.

Watch a bunch of night scenes and figure out what type of mood you want. No night lighting is real, audiences just believe your setup as long as you don't push it too far. Take high wattage lights w/ some CTB and create streaks of lights in the background of the frame, subtle, not too overly ambitious. Then bounce your key light with a little bit of CTB. The amount of CTB is your preference. I've heard of people that do full, i've heard people that do double. I prefer quarter. Once you have established your soft key decide if you need a fill. I'd say most often no if your only motivated source is the moon. Then, with the leftovers create your accent lighting. Offside kickers with a bit of wrap should do you in, and you will have your light set. Also if you are in the woods, use cookie patterns to your advantage. Maybe a bit of leaf'age somewhere, not too much, just enough.

Good luck man and post up some frames.

The question is how much of the woods need to be lit? Small pockets or a large area? I've done it with as little as a 1k and as muck as 12k. All depends on how you shoot. Could your actors have practicals like big flashlights?
