lighting in post

i shot a scene last night in a fairly large space. The effect i wanted was dinly lit and mysterious. I achieved this effect for the most part but in the final shots i went a bit overborad in lighting the actors and the room looks brigher and less shadowy than the rest of the shots.

Can I fix some of this in post using software to create a more contrasty and shadowy atmosphere? if so, what program is best suited for this?

Curves is a wonderful tool. If that doesn't work, using AE to mask areas of the frame and selectively CC the frame might work.

For as much as magic bullet is mentioned... I'm surprised more people don't talk about Jimerson's plug-in... available from www.vasst.com... called "celluloid looks"... the original, which includes Reel-Pak1... is the starting point... (and quite possibly the end point)... but I also got Reel-Pak3 and for the paltry sum of $22.49 (with code "dvinfo")

Check it out here

I don't know that it's as good as Magic Bullet... and it's only for Vegas users... AFAIK... but I like it.

I'm with ya, Matt. I like it a lot better than MB and it doesn't take 3 months to render your project.

seems to me if you over lit the background and it needs more contrast you need to create some shadows. Honestly the Nattress filters are great and are just as good as magic bullet...they have a vignette that can be inverted then shaped into whatever shape that you need. I use it when I need to create a shadow here or there to break up a backsground. With a little work it can be quite convincing. Hope that helps.
