i'm taking a basic lowel kit... but what i need to know are voltages...
i'll be in eastern turkey and Northern Iraq.
bulbs... are my question do i need different ones if its 220
or can i buy a conversion kit to plug in.
thanks
It would probably be simpler and cheaper to get a different set of globes and mains cord adapters than try and carry around a large enough transformer to handle the voltage step down. Even a 1 kVA transformer would be at least 10 lbs of copper and iron to haul around.
Its really pretty safe to assume that most non North America countries use mains that vary from 200 - 240 Volts, with 230 being the CE accepted standard. Some of the exceptions include Taiwan (115 V) and Japan (100V) but since the task is lighting there are really only two globes for most fixtures, either those designed for 115V or those for 230V applications. The mains plug adapters may be less expensive to purchase in the destination country.
Its too bad that most fixtures don't use IEC detachable input connectors. Then it would be rather simple to pickup a properly terminated mains cord anywhere that consumer products are sold.
You will find that despite the fact that the new standard is 230V, the tolerance that each supplier uses is wide enough to cover just about anything that gets delivered. If you are within +/- 5% (218 to 242 in your case) you are about as close as you should expect to get.
Having gone through the EU's CE approval process on products that my company manufactures, I am fairly certain that it is still 230V +/- 10% unless it has recently changed. Either way, the tolerance is loose enough not to make much of a practical difference.
Luckily Lowel kits do have removable head cords that are swapable for different countries. You can check on Lowels website to see if the adaptor that you need is currently available directly from them, or if you will have to find some type of adaptor in country.
