Lighting Grid

Hey guys,

I'm trying to wire a lighting grid and wanted if anyone had any advice to offer? I have a 25 x 30 foot studio that I'm currently soundproofing. I've heard recommendations for 4 x 4 spacing.

My question is how best should I deal with wiring and all?

I think to start off you need to even the circuits between the 3 phases. I always have an electrician or gaffer to do this as it is very dangerous. If you can afford it I have found the arri ceramic lights to be the best choice in a studio environment.

-250W draw for 1K output
-Cool to the touch
-Interchangeable with HMI bulbs.

It might make you job a lot easier because you can power them straight off a wall with out too much concern for overloading your system. Depending on your system and your box, you might notice that all the outlets on the walls are fed off a single circuit. In our studio every wall/section has its own dedicated line and breaker.

I find electricity to be a very serious issue and always leave it in the hands of certified electricians. I would recommend to get a pro to look at your set up/box and cabling before you make any plans.

I hope this answers a part of you question.

Thanks Emre!

Are you using a 4' x 4' spacing in your grid? I've seen several different designs, but I think just putting plugs in the ceiling would be easiest. Wiring into the grid seems to make it a lot more complicated.

Yes right now we have 4X4 but thats going to be replaced in the next 6 months. We are re-doing the entire space.

Replaced? What's going to be different? Do you have any pictures you might be able to post?

This article is pretty interesting... I'm not sure if it answers exactly the questions you are looking for but it is a definite must read for anyone interested in building a stage. I think this will be useful for you because it covers 100 amp stages.

Thanks for the link. It's definitely a good read as is anything from the ASC! I love their mag.

We are replacing older larger lights with ceramic ones. The grid shape and cabeling will change to accomidate the new lights. I will try to post before and after shots (might be a little while.).

- Yes we do have full curtains across.
- Our cabeling is running over the grid. (total of 30-35 lights).
- Our roof is 40-45 feet. I never measured the floor but you can probably park 20 cars.

Wow I'd love to checkout that studio! There's not a lot of threads on here on making your own studio! You seem to be a valuable source of information Emre!

To be perfectly honest most of the work will be contracted out. I hope to get the bidding done in the next 2 months(I actually thought it would have been 6 months ago.) Money still isnt here. I 'll try to keep some updates on this thread.
