lighting for wide, medium, close up

Hi,

I've seen DPs change the lights when they went from wide shot to medium shot and then from medium to close up.

But for me the lighting in the wide shot looks the same as the medium and the lighting in the medium looks the same as the close up.

In what ways does the lighting look different from shot to shot?

can someone please help me out?
