Hello,
This is my first post and I must say this site rules.

I would like to shoot some footage and interviews at an upcoming rave / party. What would be a good light to attatch to the camera to get the best results? One that is compatible with the DVX.

Thanks

Re: Lighting for rave / party

this may or may not be what you are looking for, but i always thought this indie film "the crossroads of fate" had a well shot club/rave looking scene: http://www.thecrossroadsoffate.com/

i have emailed the director before, seems like a cool honest guy, he may be able to help since he's done it.

Wow! That trailer was good! Thanks!
It would be great to find out what he used. We're just hoping to put a light on the camera and walk around and interview people and DJ's during the party. There are so many options, just wondering which ones people like to use.
Thanks

Re: Lighting for rave / party

I shoot allot of events and I usually speak with the lighting engineer and they’ll usually put together a custom program using the house intelligent lights and the results are pretty awesome. (first link)
Or set up a designated interview area with a pair of Omnis or something similar (second & third link)

Re: Lighting for rave / party

I'd like to piggyback off your question as well. Let's say your going to shoot something inside a Nightclub, you already have the "club" lights but since it is dark in the clubs already you are going to need to set up your own lights to compliment the club lights. So I guess what I am asking is how do you add more light for the camera but keep it down to keep the look of a club with the dance floor filled with people. Reason I ask, is I might consider shooting a scene for a music video in a club and I need to know what lights I need to set up and how many.

Re: Lighting for rave / party

Really you never know until you get there, plan for the worst possible shooting circumstances and hope for the best. I assume since you shooting a music video you’ll have time to do some prep.
What does the club have now?
I shoot in a lot of “big” clubs in Philly & South Beach so the have HUGE sound & lighting budgets so I don’t bring any lights for interior dance floor stuff.
So see what you have to work with, I used to do lighting in a few nightclubs and a lot can be done with the “house” stuff in the hands of someone who knows what there doing. Just be sure to watch out for lens flares and blown out highlights bla bla bla. I guess my best advise is to decide on how you want your scene to look and let the lighting engineer work his or her magic.

Re: Lighting for rave / party

I work in Philly now, what clubs do you/have you shot in? I am guessing your talking about the ones on Delaware Ave?

Re: Lighting for rave / party

Yes and Transit.. actually I have a music video shoot there this month.. shhh that's top secret. ;D

Re: Lighting for rave / party

Really? is the artist signed to a label or no? I am in the pre planning stages of a Music Video that some of it will be shot in Delaware. I need to do scout some locations that was just presented to me. I think with a crane shot it is going to make a hot shot. Now when you shoot these videos in the clubs are they during a regular business night of clubbin? Or do you shoot them on a "off day" like a Monday? The reason I asked is what do you do about getting all those people in the club to sign release forms..especially if they don't want to be filmed?

Since my question is off topic then let me throw a lighting question in here now! ;D So lets say you have to set up lights in the club, is it a hassle? I mean are patrons in the club telling you to turn the lights off? I would think that if it publicized that a music video will be filmed in the club that if you dont want to be filmed not come to the club or not be anywhere near the camera.

Re: Lighting for rave / party

I'm filming in a club for the short I am making now. I contacted the owners of the club and scheduled filming a couple hours before the club opens to the public. 8pm. club opens at 10pm.

We decided on a # of people to let in (150), they will begin publicizing the event 2 weeks before THE day and only those people on the sign-up list will be let in. At 150 they will close the doors. On the day everyone will sign the release as they are coming into the club.

Re: Lighting for rave / party

Shooting after-hours is one way to do it, in my case the talent (dj) will only be there for one night so we have to shoot during the normal hours of the club, crowd and all. I usual post a generic “beyond this point...” thing and/or have patrons sign a release as they enter also if your venue is like mine there are a few other rooms where patrons can run off to to avoid the camera.

Re: Lighting for rave / party

Okay I went to the club last night to scout it out basically. The lights they do have which isn't much sits right above the dance floor. I walked around the whole dance floor and looked on to the dance floor from different positions from within the club to get ideas for camera placement. I could clearly see the faces of those people in the middle of the floor but people on the outer part, I could not. So I am definitely going to have set up some lights if I go ahead with this shoot at this location. I went to a M/V shoot in VA Beach (Timbaland & Magoo) that they shot inside a club and they didn't use the club's lights at all. The crew brought in a bunch of Arri lights shooting through big scrims and lit the whole dance floor up! I am guessing I could do the same thing then add filters in post to tone down the light if it ends up brighter than I want it.
