I don't know if it's any different when shooting music videos but I'm in need of lights. Any recomendations. N keep cost in mind

Every situation is different. There is no such thing as "rap lighting," but there is the idea that a lot of/most music videos use unmotivated lighting. Just to make things look nice etc., i.e. the lighting doesn't have to make sense just look good. But it varies from person to person. I still try and light like I would a short or a narrative, but like I said its based on what you think is best for the particular shoot.

On a side note:
Ring lights are commonly used in rap videos.

Rap videos have gotten increasingly sophisticated. They often times incorporate multiple lights as set pieces. On a recent thread here someone posted a Lil' Wayne video that demonstrates this level of sophistication. I believe the thread was here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=196412. That said, like GottaBeTheJuice said, there are no rules. Many video are shot with natural lighting, outside.

Mostly this is a budget decision, how much bang for the buck depends on your blood, sweat and creativity.
