Lighting for a Sony HVR-HD1000P

Hi! I'm not sure if this thread has to be here, but since it's directly related to cinematography...

I've recently bought a Sony HVR-HD1000P for my short film. I like it, its light, has good lenses but it has serious issues with low key lighting, too. It's a noisy camera which easily loses definition.

What are the lowest lights you recommend me to light my scenes without losing definition? And which camera config? I'm filming horror short films and I'd like to imitate the lighting of David Cronenberg's films like Spider.

If I'm not being specific enough, please tell me.

Thank you.

The lowest output light I use/own are 600w openfaces, after that is is all 1kw and 2kw with a few 750w. You can always make a light output less than originally designed buy making more light come out it pretty difficult. If you don't know what you want or what fits your style rent a truck from a rental house or hire a gaffer with a lighting package for this shoot and see what you like.

The lowest wattage lights you can use depends on your camera's chip sensitivity, the distance you can place such lights to your subject, your desired shooting f/stop & shutter speed on the camera, AND the zone of which you wish the light to light the subject.

If you can, always use a slightly larger lamp then you think you need. You can always take light away, but you'd be hard pressed to find ways to get more juice.

If you can provide the camera's rated sensitivity, that is a good start! Without knowing, I can't answer what the minimum would be but I'm sure a 650w or 1k would most likely be acceptably adequate. But of course every shot has different demands.

The camera's light sensitivity is 5 lux. This is why I'm that concerned about low light.

Oh, and KKeller, thanks a lot for your advice!

I guess I should mention that I have never shot with the Sony HVR-HD1000P but my advice was just a general idea, not camera specific.
