Lighting Demo...

Hey,

I put up my lighting demo a few days ago and I was wondering if I could get some feedback. How to make it more appealing, did I use the right footage, should it be longer, etc. Anything would be appreciated.

Hi, Brooksy.
I noticed no-one had a made any comments so I thought I'd tell you what I think.
I liked the interview lighting, especially the one with the doctor. The classroom scene (to my eye) looked like it was blowing out on the cards/paper on the blackboard. That was a little distracting. I liked the shots from the movies and would like to see a more balanced combo of shots like that plus the interview stuff. Still, well done.
Please take my opinions with a grain of salt as you, no doubt, know more about this subject than I do.
Cheers just the same.

I like the shot from Severance but most of this reel I noticed the lighting; I prefer to not notice, ya know ?

Thanks for all the comments. I didn't even realize people were still looking at this post.

a1selecta-As for diffusion I used whatever I could get my hands on. Mostly it was tough-spun or 250 but in very limited supply. Most times I will try and bounce, simply because I don't have the equipment, to get that nice soft look. The only equipment I have to light are four Lowel Omni lights and three Mole Richardson Tweenies, this doesn't always allow for getting the lighting that would be ideal.

SonicStates- Very good point with background of the classroom shot. I would have to agree with you on that. Because of my work I don't get to spend a lot of time lighting but maybe I switch out that shot for another that maybe a little better. Thanks again.

J.R. Hudson- Thanks for the post and believe me I know exactly what you mean. Again I only have so much to work with but good point. Do you think I should take out certain shots which look a little more "lit" then others that may not? (Does that make sense?)

Thanks again for the comments guys. I appreciate them.

The lighting on the faces of the first four shots is too hot or harsh. The couple sitting at the bar are not lit the same. The guy's face is way too hot. The best lighting is on the guy speaking in what appears to be a dentist office.

But hey what do i know. :-)

It must be your computer or possibly the compression settings, because when I watch the source files I don't have the faces blown out. I can understand why you might see it as blown out though.

I would have to agree with you about the bar shot. The reason that shot is in there is because I had to light the entire scene including the extras in the background and I only had seven lights to work with and limited diffusion. Prehaps I should take that shot out because it is some of my earlier work.

I do appreciate the view and the critiques. Thank you.

I like the scenes from the movie...but some of the interviews were a little too harsh on the lighting...and some of them looked like 80s style of lighting. Don't be afraid to use more contrast and shadows...

Ha ha, that's a good one. I'm glad to see that style is starting to go bye-bye.

Broosky, I like the shots where the lighting doesn't call attention to itself, so I'd have to go with the dentist shot as mentioned and the guy in the gym. And the shot of the teacher seems fairly well exposed on my monitor.

The shot of the toolbox is clever and nicely lit. It would be nice to see actual video from the film, but I get the gist of it.

So there you go. Maybe in 2 months you'll get another slew of comments.

Yeah. But I very much appreciate them when they come. The toolbox shot was actually lit and shot for a bumper for a show that never came to be. Thanks again for taking the time and the feedback. It is always appreciated.

Re-reading my post, I think 2 of my thoughts got streamed together. I was talking about the movie stills you posted in the 2nd sentence. Just wanted to clarify.

Oh... I get you. I should look for that link. I am not a fan of watching that film because the lights are in a lot of shots. It wasn't me. I didn't run the camera. Good call though.
