Lighting Courses

Does anyone know of any good lighting courses on the west coast. I would really be interested in taking one to get a better handle on the tricks and lighting requirements for various scenes and setups.
Alos a breakdown of the terminology/lingo and seeing exactly what it is and how best to use it. I know i could lite a scene if I knew what was best for what situations, also geling for various setups...nd for windows....

Re: Lighting Courses

"The Power of lighting for film and videos" by Bill Holshevnikoff A 4 video set. It is great. He also was a speaker at DVexpo. He wrote the insert for the Arri light kits. 8)

Re: Lighting Courses

I would also like to take a lighting course.

Any in the Vancouver area?

Re: Lighting Courses

Yes John,
There is a west coast to Canada 8) just above the ole 49th.
But i am certified to take my dogsled cross-boarder.

Hey Norm maybe call WF Whites...in Van see if they know of anything.

Re: Lighting Courses

No problem John, I blew my back out so I'm CRANKY....but might take a trip to south of the 49th if i can find a good short course.

Re: Lighting Courses

Taylor, I'm tellinig you check out the 'Power of lighting" videos. I'm very pleased with them. By the way at the DV Expo they were charging $300.00 for the course in person with him. They are a great intro to the world of lighting. 8)

Re: Lighting Courses

Also Elite Video has a good course. 3 DVDs called 'Digital lighting Magic" Goes from guerilla to pro set-ups. 8)

Re: Lighting Courses

Holshevnikoff's series is better than that. It's been years and years since I watched 'em, but I learned a lot from them. They also seem to be oriented primarily towards interview lighting, but at least they use professional instruments and they really show you what effect each light has in achieving the final look. It's a decent tape series, and if you don't know much about lighting it'd be a good place to start.

Re: Lighting Courses

Thanks guys for all your help and resources. I will check out the tape series...I'm not wanting to take the job of the gaffer but more to direct him in what i want; and then know what can be achieved with what tools.
Thanx

Re: Lighting Courses

I tell you what ! I went from knowing nothing about lighting to head guy on the set just from these two video sets. And I work in Hollywood! Go figure! 8)

Re: Lighting Courses

I have to add, unless you have a 2/5 ton grip truck at your disposel. All you can learn with a basic light kit is interviews or basic lighting.
I have an Arri softbank1 kit. I now know what it can do and what it can't do. And can you say GUERILLA? 8)

Re: Lighting Courses

elvis, which video are you referring to w/ this statement:

"I tell you what ! I went from knowing nothing about lighting to head guy on the set just from these two video sets." Are you talking about the elite video set or the power of lighting? which did you like the best and why? or would you recommend both? thanks!

Re: Lighting Courses

I gotta vote for the "Power of Lighting" series. They're slanted towards Arri and Chimera gear (which is great stuff) but the principles apply to anything.

Re: Lighting Courses

I bought mine from www.konalight. com for $100.00 for the set of power of lighting. Perfect for someone with an Arri kit. On the pro side. Now if your a guarilla on a budget the Elite series is not bad either. Before I learned about lighting I was just another guy with a DVX100. Once I started talking lights on my small budget productions I have gotton gigs as a DP Coming up. So I think as a total begginer when it comes to lights. I have learned a great deal from these sets. Someone like Steve should produce one for us. Even though I got a lot from them they are in no way the end all course. Just a good starting point IMHO 8)

Re: Lighting Courses

I have to add that I have a library of How to videos Another high end set is the Kodak Cinematography Master Series set. Covers a lot more but we are talking full on grip trucks with all the bells and whistles. 8)

Re: Lighting Courses

I will look into getting this as well. I watched a couple of the free previews and it looks like a good deal. I would love to have an Arri kit (Probally have to wait until XMAS before that expense!) :'(

Re: Lighting Courses

Alright Steve! I had a feeling. I have to say John Jackman's "Lighting for Digital Video & Television" Book helped me a lot with concepts. Plus his video "Basic Lighting for DV" is a standard! Just some of the places I've been to learn our craft 8)
