Lighting Books

After working on a semi-pro set and having no idea wtf anything was called or how to use it I took it upon myself to learn for the next time.

These two books on lighting and grip are priceless. They outline the various rolels of the people on set and explore the theory and practice of using the plethora of lighting equipment. For me it was worth it alone because it explains how to use a light meter and how to correctly coil stingers :undecided

Film Lighting
Has interesting quotes from DP's and Gaffers to supplement material.

Set Lighting Technicians Handbook
A great guide with look up charts and straight forward explanations of basic to intermediate lighting techniques.

Answered a lot of questions I was definitly not going to ask the DP on set.

Hope this helps someone. :engel017:

PS: You can see pics from the set where I was pretty useless on my site.

Check out "Neon River"

Might I suggest a lighting primer (sorry..don't know the formal name of the book) by Jack Jackman. He offers excellent suggestions for lighting, detailed info about light and electrical theory (for those who are inclined to read about these things) and even tips for modeling with light.

John's book is "Lighting for Digital Video and Television" second edition. You may want to check out Blaine Brown's "Motion Picture Lighting" an excellent book and it discusses all the equipment that is used.
