Lighting bands in studio

Hey,

Tomorrow and Sunday I am lighting two bands in a television studio, so four in total. I'm not sure what the style of music is to be yet, but both bands are playing just one song. The requirements are that the lighting must be static and the lighting for each band should be distinctive from each other. There will also be no set, so just the bands against either a black or white curtain.

The lights I have available are as follows.

-6 x 1.5k fresnels 3 of which are height adjustable on pentographs
-10 x 500w cyclorama lights
-5 x 500w fresnels
-2 x spot lights
-2 x (500 or 1k cant remember which) broad soft lights. ALso height adjustable on pentographs.
-gels and 216 diffusion for the barn doors.

All the lights are controllable from the lighting desk, but as i said earlier this can only be used t oset the luminance not program any sequences etc.

I have some lighting experience, but only limited experience in lighting bands.

I know this is a a how long is peice of string kinda question, but if people could give me some rough ideas for set ups they would use for varing styles of music so I can take some ideas along with me tomorrow it would be greatly appreciated.

For a simple quick setup you could do the following:

-Hang fresnels from the grid to backlight each member individually, with a mid level intensity, coloring as you see fit.
-Use your cyc lights to "key" the members from the front, I would recommend a 3/4 arrangement. Either to the left, or the right. Diffuse if necessary and leave tungsten.
-Soft lights from the front at a lower intensity to add fill/lessen contrast. Diffused as well with faint coloring to add some pop.

If you still feel a little nervous, watch some performances from Conan or other late night shows and pay special attention to how it is lit, and what you could use to recreate the look with the tools you have available.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. ILl try something like that out.

I have actually found out what tomorrows bands will be. The first one will be a solo accoustic guitarist, playing by him self(most likely sat on a stool), and the second are a jazz band. I was thinking of filming the accoustic guitarist in front of plain black curtains, with heavy backlighting to make him pop out. Then as ket and fill the fresnels at 45 and 45 degrees eitside from the front, with some soft diffusin on the fill. Any particular recomendations on lighting these types of bands?

oh yeah, just too add to that, I believe the jazz band want the final output to be in black and white. Im gussing something high contrasting would work well here?
