Hi
This is my first time lighting for a simple shoot, and have a very limited budget. Will need to rent everything.

The space- a roughly 15X15 foot store with lighting from a window covering the eastern wall, and, old fluorescents on the ceiling.

I need to add supplemental light both to counteract the fluorescent and light the main subject for a 3/4 and close up shot.

Would a single lite panel be sufficient? If not what is the minimum recommended? What about diffusion? If possible, the more specific the advice, the better.

Instead of counteracting those overheads, leave them off and do all the lighting with your own equipment.

The type of light you use will depend on what you're going for. That's a matter of your script, your desired mood, the type of character, and your directorial choices concerning all of that. So, for specifics, you need to supply some of your own. :)

First, turn off that overhead, then rent a Kino Gaffer kit. Use the window and the Gaffer kit together and all should be good.

how many overheads? You could buy flo bulbs with the right color temp and replace the ones overhead for the part..
