Hi all. I have a somewhat new lighting problem to tackle.
We're writing a proposal for a promotional piece for a gym and I really have not idea how to go about lighting it. The space is Huge and the only thing I can think of is a gigantic soft overhead source.

Ideas?

HMI's through a silk/bounced or an overhead source as you said... depends on your shots too i guess.
An overhead soft source could work well but it depends budget etc too id think....

I assume there is no daylight coming in anywhere?

Tom.

There's some sunlight coming in but because of the buildings surrounding there's no direct sun. Based on what I've seen I'm mainly worried about filling in the shadow areas during the day.

Are there no lights in the Gym? For wider shots I would go available and then light tighter shots. For interviews showing the background I would turn all the light off and just go with a couple pools of light for some highlights.

We shot a PSA a while back in a gymnasium. We didn't have much of a budget, so we used the gym's overhead florescents and supplemented it with one 2K HMI streaming down from an office window
that overlooked the gym (to simulate sunlight).

You can see the effect at this link (please forgive the encoding quality)

We didn't mind the "florescent" look since the setting was a gymnasium. For the closeups, I
believe we used a Rifa 66 soft box for a little fill.

If anyone would like to comment on the piece, I'd be happy for the feedback.

Of course, if you have the budget, this would be a fun option :)

one of those helium inflated softboxes to light that huge hall... i imagine they would be quite pricey so rental would be the best way to go but its certainly and option!...

Actually, we have access to one of these. Seems like it might be the best idea.

I would go with the helium balloon as a nice soft ambient light, then as 'me myself and I' said, use an HMI to act as sunlight and key....

Considering the size (particularly the height) of the balloon, and how much space between the bottom of the balloon and the top of your shot frame, seems like you would need considerable ceiling height to deploy one indoors. This would work in a traditional gym with a high ceiling, but there seem like more of those "fitness center" business built into traditional office spaces with 10 or 12 foot ceilings. I suppose HMI bounced off the white ceiling is one of the few solutions in that situation?
