Lighting a car internally

Hi all,

I’m about to start shooting a low Budget documentary that involves a road trip, I will be mounting the camera using a sticky pod in various position in the car. I was sitting the car (a 4WD) last night and noticed how dark it was in the cabin, when there are no streetlights. Any suggestions on how to light the car cabin? It needs to look natural as possible it’s a documentary not a movie. I was thinking maybe I could replace the internal car lights with a more powerful globes, any comments on that?

Thanks heaps

Michael

It the car is moving, wouldn't the cabin lights would normally be off?

What you should try to do is use a the dash lamps as a motivation for a set of lamps to illuminate the talent. Kino makes a number of items that are perfect for this but they come with Kino prices. A lower priced alternative would be to get some small 12V fluorescent fixtures like what might get used in the RV industry. Gel them to match the "look" of the dash and with a bit of creative mounting, you should be able to get good results.

we shot a short a couple of years ago and we used those "tap lights" that you see on late night tv. They look pretty natural.

Tell you what, I bought that $10 fluorescent batt powered light (From Lowes) and used it the other night. Mounted it with gaffers tape below the actors and went with it.. It was fantastic! Thanks to DVXuser for the advice!
