Lighting a Backyard with an Awning?

Anyone have any suggestions on how to light a backyard with an awning? I'm shooting a real estate video and having a hard time getting this particular shot of the backyard. We tried shooting at around 10am but the footage came out looking terrible since the contrast between the bright sun and dark awning was so great. Is there a more optimal time to film during the day? Should I wait until the sun is hitting the front of the house or should I try to light the awning with large lights?

You might consider getting a smartphone app like sun seeker or light trac so you will know the sun's position at that location for any given time.

+1 for Sunseeker. I use it all of the time for LS's. it's really helpful when you're going to be in one location over several hours and/or you start out with the sun behind buildings, not over the horizon or its cloudy and could break and you need to place the silk in-case it pops out in the middle of a shot. And you can look ahead to future dates and other locations, too.
