well, I use a bogen 3001N leg and 3130 head combo. It does an OK job, but is by no means a very good fluid head. You can do smooth pans, but not as smooth as with a fluid head. It is small and rugged though. I think you could even put a 503 fluid head on it too....

You can also try the 701rc2 head. I like it better than the 501 head and it is considerably smaller ligther cheaper and comes with a counterbalance spring. I bought it at $69 when it came out but I think the price went up because it is so nice for its size. I also use a 503 head for studio work, but the 701rc is great for run and gun.
