Light Stands

How much is your budget?
There are a lot of cheaper alternatives now, Like in home depot or hardware stores there are halogens that come with stands like those used in construction they are heavy duty.

I was thinking 30 or less, but maybe something collapsable, i have to fit them in the back of a mercedes, along with all my other gear. But maybe i should just take the bullet and pay 60 for the lowel ones?

Good light stands make life really easy. ALthough I've got a couple of Impact stands that serve me pretty well. I wouldn't put giant lights up tall with them, but they pack small and cost about $20. Or just trade the mercedes for a honda and get some nice light stands :) And sandbags. Boy do I love sandbags. Not sure why but they just make me happy. Maybe its just a strong disdain for crap falling over.

I am trying to imagine you cramming steel light stands - heck any light stands - in the back of your Mercedes.

It's okay, I get funny looks when I start pulling a bunch of TV equipment out of the Land Rover.

you can get pretty heavy duty light stands of ebay for about 10 bucks (plus 20-30 dollars shipping) from liquidators if you know where to look.

That's nothing. I've got a 2000 Civic coupe, one of the smallest cars on the road. It's amazing what all can be arranged to fit in that trunk and back seat. Light stands, lights, umbrellas, tripods, sound & video equipment, lenses, backdrops, a dolly, and 2 car rigs. I made a short in Borrego Springs (middle of the desert about 2 hours drive). Loading and unloading took almost as long as the drive. :)

Once had a craft services girl who set up shop out of a Range Rover. Further proof that I was on the wrong (read: agency) side of the production equation.

Back on topic -- I've gotten several light stands off eBay from 2dreammaker. They're not the heaviest duty, but they hold up pretty well. And were stupid cheap.

Yeah I forgot I got a dreammaker stand off ebay too. 99 cents plus $15 or so shipping. Not horribly impressed, but yeah it holds up a light. The joints stick, and its heavier than my impacts which are more stable and easier to use. Also bought a reflector, reflector holder, and grip head from there - those all suck and are pretty worthless and a waste of money. Ok cheap ebay rant over...

Hmmm. Maybe he switched stand brands. Haven't had any issues with mine. And the reflectors I got were pretty decent. Hmmmm. Granted, I don't use them day-in-day-out, so results may vary.
