Light minus the C-stands

Hey. I have a about 6 c-stands and a 2 soft boxes from a friend who's into photography. I"m looking to get some lights to start out without having to buy a c-stand with it. Basic package stuff. Nothing outlandish. I have china ball lights as well with Boom kits arms to go with the c-stands. What do you have in mind that I could get started with. I know you'll need a key light, fill, and a back light so something to get started like that maybe a bit more.

A couple of tungsten fresnels are always staple items you'll use all the time - 650's and 300's.

Some basic grip gear like flags, nets, sandbags and some various clamps are a good idea.

curse those c- stands once you use em' you can't live without em'(: Definately look on ebay for lighting, or craigslist depending on where your at. I went with the altman proline fresnels....I love these lights! they are in my opinion more durable and as equally useful as the arri fresnels. Get a couple of 650's and lamp one down to 300w for variety.....I don't know if the guy still has them but over at dvinfo a guy was selling his altman's for 200 a pop with barn doors, bulbs. People have mixed feelings about lowel's but the lowel pro light is a sweet little light, very focusable and throws a strong beam, the other lowel's I personally think aren't worth the purchase. Get a couple for hair/kicker light, or accents etc... and finally get one or two 1k open face lights to compliment your softboxes. 1k are nice cause you can always knock the light down and have more available when needed....it sucks to need more light and not have it. If you can afford it get some flags for your c-stands..these are really nice to have to control your soft light or whatever. Hope that helps

Make sure your softboxes are for hot-lights. If you got them from your photographer friend they might be for flash and will burn if you put hot-lights in them.
