Light Bundle Recommendation

Hello,

My friend is looking to buy some lights but is on a very VERY tight budget. I recommended going to rostronics.com. They suggested this 1300watt package and this 500watt package. They also have a 1200watt package but it doesn't come with any soft boxes or anything. The 500 and 1200 are focusable lights where as teh 1300 is not...that's why the 1200 package is more expensive. He is looking for the best for all around needs and for the cheapest.

These lights are going to be used for anything and everything. I know how to light well but I have never bought lights, so my guess is to get the 500watt package simply because anything stronger could, unfortunatley, be satisfied with work lights with some diffusion on them.

Sorry to post something as common as this, I know how repeated questions can get under peoples skins but my friend needs to order these today or tomorrow.

Thanks in advance.

I've been looking at these packages myself and am also on a VERY tight budget. I've decided to go with the 500 watt as a very simple starter kit. Given that the lights are focusable, a soft box is included, and carrying cases - seems like a good deal. The best lights they offer to my eye, though, are the GY-650's which are focusable and can go from 250 - 650. I like that versatility. My ideal 3-light kit would be two of those and one of the 250/300's (the ones in the 500w kit). Whatever kit you end up working with, would love to hear your comments.

It's been my experience that more is almost always better with lighting, especially with mini dv. The reason I say this is because you can difuse the light which softens the light and brings the intesity way down. You can also add scrims to the lights to reduce the intensity even more. Also in camera you can just lower the f-stops to reduce all the light on a set. If you don't have enough light you have no where to go.

I have (2) 300/600 watt w/ 1 softbox, (1) focusable 1,000 watt w/ softbox, and (1) 200 watt spot. I have barn doors for all the lights.
