Licensing an old book to adapt

Hey guys i was wondering on how to go about licensing material that's 50+ years old. I can't talk to the author or anything so should i go straight to the publishing company and talk to them about adapting it to a screenplay?

Contact the publishing company, ask for the subsidiary rights department.

That is what you need.

I would say the amount of money required would be what you negotiate with the rights holder.
