License fee for trailer music

I'm putting together a 2.5 minute trailer for our very low budget, very independent documentary. A fairly well known local musician/composer has agreed to let us use a piece of his music for the trailer.

Regarding licensing and fee for use, he has said "As far as thoughts on licensing, I would be happy to have you guys use the track. Also happy to work within your budget. Maybe the next step would be for you to throw out a figure that feels appropriate to you?"

This is great, but I have no idea what would be appropriate. The trailer, at this point, is primarily for web use and probably short term, i.e., it will be used in our Kickstarter campaign and on our own website. I know that when the film is fully complete we will likely cut a new, official trailer and that will be a whole new ball of wax.

Any ideas on a reasonable fee for a 2.5 minute piece of music for limited use? Our overall total budget for the film is roughly 100k (much of that in-kind).

Thanks.

Trailer rights are very different that actual movie rights (and much less) so price accordingly. If it's essential to the sucess of the trailer (and thus the film), I would offer $500.
