Libec tripods

Does anyone here have experience with this brand? I've been hearing good things on the web, but then again I've heard a lot of good things about Bogen tripods and I didn't like my 503 head very much.

I'm looking at this one currently (I need 22lb capacity):

Is this tripod able to stand without the spreader?

Another question, does anyone have an opinion regarding on-ground spreaders vs. mid-level spreaders? I've used on-ground spreaders before and for level ground they are nice to have because you can sandbag your tripod. I'm guessing I could also sandbag mid-level spreaders, but it wouldn't be as stable.

I personally love my LS22, but I can't say much about the bigger Libecs, as I haven't tried them.

Tripods that use spreaders cannot stand without them. I personally love ground-level spreaders, but that's probably just because it was what i was trained with, and what I've had on my tripods.
