Levitating Coolness!

Soon we'll be flying around in cars and dating robots.

Crazy...

That's pretty cool. I wonder how it works. Normally you can make things levitate with magnets, but there has to be something to keep it in place. Hmm, perhaps another magnet with the other polarity?

I think the ability to do this isn't new, it's the amount of control they have over the magnetic fields that's impressive.

Actually the flying car has been around for several years, Moller just wont release the Skycar to the public until they finish making a computer controlled version to prevent human error, drunk flying, etc. http://www.moller.com/

And as far as the dating robots Japan is already working on that with Actroid, supposed to be more advanced than Asimo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=091ugdiojEM Kinda creepy if you ask me...

Dude... you're freaking me out!

Heh, yeah, seen those things. They've been taking their sweet time with the flying car. But yeah, the flying car would be a much larger learning curve, and far more disastrous with drunk driving and misshaps. A fender bender could turn into a fiery collision up in the sky. So for it to be successful it would need to be guided. I wonder if people will adapt. Or perhaps it'll be a sort of taxi service, or rich people will only get it.

It'll start off being rich-people-only but as rich people buy it, that'll lower the price until it can become affordable. But you're right about it being guided, that's sort of the point of these competitions now with a computer-guided car. No way can we trust Joe Q to pilot a flying car.

Corbin Dallas just isn't in the cards for us.

The levitating thing is pretty cool... and yeah, of course magnetic repulsion is nothing new... the control IS the whole point.

So how do you think they're doing it?

I'll wager that it works like an LED does... that the magnet is already set up for repulsion naturally... but that a low voltage field is creating the invisible pole that holds the magnet in place. Whatta' ya' guess it is?
