levels in Vegas

I think my white level may be to high but I would appreciate suggestions. It is my understanding that for TV levels on DVD, blacks should be at 0 and whites at 100, however when I view a DVD on my 32" JVC TV, there is a part where it seems the whites might be clipping. The part is where the whole picture fades to white. Should or would it be better to lower the the white level under 100?

Any suggestions are appreciated,
Bart

I try not to go above 90.

As for the blacks, it depends on how you have your scopes set. If you have them set to display 7.5 IRE as 0, then 0 is good. If not, the blacks will be too black. It won't not work or anything, but if you have fades to black, etc., it will be noticeably darker than the letterboxing bands supplied by the DVD player.

make sure the TV you are viewing is set up to SMPTE color bars .. if you have it set up wrong then the clipping you are seeing may not be clipping.. i always include set up bars ( extras) in DVD menu as i find most persons seem to set contrast too high on their sets which causes whites to clip to early ..

NTSC blacks at 0 is based on using the scopes set to studio 16-235rgb ...

Do check that you have the scopes setup properly. For Vegas 5/6 using the default Vegas codec, the scopes should have the studioRGB setting checked. The following tutorial provides more details:

I would aim to peg 100... this will make the most of what's available to you.

2- If you're fading to white, check that the white is not the illegal 255 255 255 RGB white.
Legal white with the default Vegas codec is 235 235 235 RGB. Many plug-ins in Vegas don't obey that.

I hope that helps.
