Level fluctuation - Sennheiser G2

Just got my first G2 setup, plugged it in to my HPX500. Sounds strong but pumps the level up when quiet. The camera has ALC settings and they are turned off. Does the mic itself have an ALC feature that can be defeated?
 
could be the companding in those analog units.
Make sure the transmitter gain is up to a nice and strong level.
Don't try to make up for a low level transmitter output on the receiver side.
