Letus + Mattebox

How exactly does a Mattebox attach to a 35mm slr lense? I ordered a letus35 enhanced and I need a Mattebox/rods , I've been looking @ cavision which looks good to me but confusing (lots of models). Cinequipwhite, the store I usualy buy from tells me that Cavision is more of a consumer thing. Sooooo, I'm just confused, I just want something that works/looks pro.

This is what Cinequipewhite recomended, anyone familiar with it ?

Everything you need to know is in this thread.

I read the thread many times, it talks for one page about the actual mattebox and the rest is people drewling over your kick ass setup. My question is more technical, I'm sure there's a simple answer, but I want to know how the Mattebox attaches to the lense. I know that it holds on the rods, BUT, not sure how it fits different size lenses.

For example;

Lets say you have 2 different lenses one is huge and the other is smaller, how does the mattebox adapt to that ? Alot of the Mattebox talk about clipping on to the actual camera lense which makes sense, but with a 35mm adapter that is not the case.

Also, is there a big difference between the 16:9 mattebox and a regular one ?
hope that made sense

And also an important question;

- The letus35 Enhanced is shaped different then the other letus models. I'm just wondering how the Mattebox would fight with that. On most pictures the lense is perfectly centered in the middle of the rods at the regular height of the lense , like this

But with the Letus Enhanced would it be too low ? Is it adjustable ?

How would you put a mattebox on this ?

My question sort of goes along with this, could I use a 4 x4 matte box, or 4x5.65 or 6 x 6.... what is the difference ? Video matte box or Film matte box? Does it matter?

I see two different kinds on AbelCine, there's Clip-on and Swing A-way, what's the difference there?

what about CINETACTICS soft Mattebox, I know it's not the same but can it work ? cause it's really cheap lol

The mattebox does not actually attatch to the lens at all, the rods basically hold it in place. basically the back of the mattebox has a rubber hood, and the lens fits through that hood so that light does not enter it, but the entire weight of the mattebox rests on the rod support.
The whole system is pretty modular and adjustable, but I would ask queyen for the lens offset to find out how far you would have to adjust the mattebox. It most likely will work, but don't hold me to that, I'm not sure how far you would have to adjust the mattebox to fit.

Hi

I've read this thread and also scharky's thread about his dvx set up. I have a similar question too and im glad these threads helped me understand matteboxes abit more.

I have my mind set on getting Cavision's 15mm rod supports with 25cm rails. What bugs me right now is the choice of mattebox. I've been thinking about Cavision's 3x3 mattebox, Indiesnap's DV Mattebox and Cinetactics Matteblox DV .

One issue would be cost effectiveness in the long run. Im using Letus35A with Nikon manual lens (52mm filter diameter) and the use of adapter rings are inevitable with these matteboxes, thus adding to the price. Also, 3x3 glass filters cost less than 4x4 filters.

Having said that, I guess my option would be to get Cavision's 3x3 mattebox? Since you said the mattebox rests on the rods, should I just get the ABS mount ($199) and not bother with the metal mount ($250) version? Which adapter rings shoud I get to use it with my Nikon lenses?

Ok, this could be ridiculous idea BUT, would it be possible to use the standard dvx sunshade and find a way to mount it on the rods (cant be that hard) and attach flags or the cinetactics mattebox on it ?

In fear of not making any sense I made a horrible photoshop montage :P just for you guys, yay. :D

With Cinetactics:

Tell me if this could be possible, or what you think.

Pretty cool photoshop! lol

But I think there might be a problem with the Cinetactics. Its mattebox has a 72mm circular thread which would not be able to fit DVX's rectangular hood.

And I'd like to ask, most matteboxes place their filter trays as close to the lens as possible.....does Cinetactics way of placing their filter holder away from the lens affect the image?

The anamorphic version of the cinetactics could probably fit I think. It would be abit BIG, but I could fill in the gap with something small. I Dont understand the dimensions on the site. I want to know exactly what the measurements are for the square part where the cinetactics attaches to the sunshade, but the site gives me
vague measurements

Dimensions: 220×170×85mm 9.0×7.0×3.7"

A 52-72mm step up ring and our 72mm Threaded adapter will get our Matteblox DV on your lens, unless your lens front turns.

Hey man, I have the letus35a flip. I don't know wether you have a flip or not
but my setup should work for you ether way. first of all you need rods

But threw Tim Ovel I got 18" rods for $129 (best deal i could find)
(email this guy. his site is www.indifocus.com

Next the MatteBox I just got my from www.hysonfilms.com for $164
Make Sure Make sure ! you ask for the adjustable brace and that price includes
shipping and everything eles.

This is a Very light weight mattebox. The idea behind using it with a 35mm adapter
is that it primarily uses the rods for strong connection, but still works great with the
lens and adapter

I would send you a pic of my rig but Im in cali right now "no access"
If you got any questions just PM me
