Just wondering if the Manfrotto 503 HDV head is sufficient enough to carry a Letus, HVX, rails and a different array of lenses? If not, what other head would you guys suggest?
How many lbs. do you think the whole setup is including the hvx attached to it? I'm just asking because I have a 505 head and the tilt lock sucks. It was broken when I bought it used and my camera is always tilting down on it's own if left alone for one second (and that's just the hvx with the battery). I need a head that will support it all and will lock down without supervision.
did you try searching this topic?
there are many discussion about it.
most are talking if the 501 or 503 could held the weight of an hvx and 35mm adapter and many people say they both do fine. (some say the 501 isn't ideal)
from my experience, the 501 head held my entire rig and has no problem at all.
I used the hvx+35mm adapter+a full Zacuto setup without any problem.
so I could imagine the 503 would do even better.
The original 501 has no counterbalance function so if you have a heavy rig on it and forget to lock the tilt and walk away, there is a good chance that your rig will tip over, tipping the whole tripod over and causing a lot of damage.
The new 503HDV does have a counterbalance that you setup for some resistance so the camera will self level, even if you forget to lock the tilt and walk away from the camera.
You should really buy something higher quality like a Sachtler, O'Connor, Miller, Vinten or Panther but assuming that you cannot afford a pro tripod, take a look at the Libec LS-38, pretty impressive for the money.
The Bogens are not the optimum setup, they are what people buy when they spent too much on their camera and adapter and have no money left for camera support. The old 501 and 503 are horrendously bad and the new 501HDV and 503HDV are much better but still not very good because they have stiction and whip back at the end of moves. With camera support, you get what you pay for.
