Letus Flip / XHA1 Questions

Everyone,
I'm purchasing a Canon XHA1 and loved the footage that I've seen with the Letus Flip adapter and want to get one, but not sure what lenses to purchase. I saw that Steven Dempsey used a 28mm Nikon f2.8, a 50mm Nikon f1.8, and a 100mm Nikon f2.8. I'm not too familiar with Nikon lenses, so I'm not sure the difference between Nikon and Nikor. I also noticed that none of those lenses are available on B&H at the time. There is, however, a Zoom Wide Angle - Telephoto AF Zoom Nikkor 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D IF Autofocus Lens (Mfr # 1971). Can I get the same picture quality as Steven Dempsey's shorts (ref - http://www.pinelakefilms.com/XHA1/a1letustest.wmv) using the XHA1, the Letus Flip (and which one) and the aforementioned lens? Also, anymore advice would be greatly appreciated. I am really looking forward to shooting soon.

Thanks All,

I've been reading the stickies, but I haven't encountered anything about needing monitors for the A1, or the questions about which lenses work best for the Letus.

theres no "best". every lens is different. every lens looks different. the letus seemms to do well with nikin lenses.

The reason those lenses aren't at B&H is because Nikon doesn't make manual focus lenses any more. There are still a lot of them available pre-owned though. Most people recommend getting prime lenses over zooms for DOF adapters because they are not as heavy and lose less light.

Okay. Excellent. I watched the short tutorial and it was really good, but didn't tell me anything I didn't know. I have a degree in film, but we focused heavily on actual film, so the whole adapter thing is out of my element, hence my inquiries. I appreciate all the information though. I guess I've just read many places that some people have a hard time focussing using the Letus Adapter on the A1, and then Steven Dempsey said he didn't have problems. Also, I wasn't sure if primse lenses were the way to go or not. These are all questions that I couldn't find in the stickies. If they're there, I'd love to see. Thanks for everything though.

Hey john try and keep your responses in this thread only. It makes it easier to respond to you.

Excellent. Thanks guys. I think I'm going to purchase the XHA1, and a Letus Flip (though the website still looks a little shady to me), and then I'll ebay a few Nikon prime lenses. Anyone have any recommendations?

Or, honestly, is the redrock worth the extra money? And I didn't find the XHA1 on their list of cameras that they cater to, so do you know if it's compatible?

I really want to apologize for all the questions and posts, but I'm about to embark on a very pricey adventure here. I LOVE filmmaking, but I need to make sure it's going to work for me.

So, with that said, I have a few more questions:

-If I were to go with the redrock, I would have to choose a mount for a certain type of lens (i.e. canon, nikon, etc), correct? So therefore, I'd have to buy all my prime lenses from either Canon, Nikon (well, not from them, but their brands).

-Are there any 35mm adapters that are prime-lens-universal. I mean, are there any that provide an adapter that can mount any brand of prime lens?

I'm confused.

"The SGpro Rev3 unit(Rev2 pictured) with achromatic close up lens, 15mm rods support system with sliding plate: £410.00"

I converted that. It came out to roughly $551 (US) dollars. Is that right? I thought it was way more expensive? Or have I not figured in all the additional items that I'll need?

they can all mount different lenses, you just need different mounts that interchange.

Also the SGpro:

it comes out to something like 850 - 1000 depending on exchange rate. IT comes with everythign except the lens mount. you need to choose which you want and buy that from wayne. Nikons are good, Canons are good.

Excellent. I did, however, notice they're not shipping til Aug 15. That kind of sucks. I was wanting to shoot for a competition at the beginning of August. Anyway, I think it's all coming together now. I noticed that SGpro offered mounts, so when you say, "buy that from wayne," is there a different order for Mounts? Or do I just kind of pick which mount I wan and he ships them seperately?

Also, I'm on gmail (I noticed you were), if you want to chat that way. johnny1up@gmail.com.

By the way, thank you SO MUCH for all your help. I know I can be a bit difficult. But I really appreciate your generosity in information.

I think the reason Timur said that, is because we did not have the order page/cart online when he bought his unit, it was done via email.

So yes, simply tick the mount you would like and this will be added to the cart. The unit will arrive with this mount installed.

The Letus35 FE can be used with Nikon or Canon FD lens. The front end of the adapter has an interchangable lens mount.

When you are looking on eBay, look for both Nikon and Canon and get whichever one is cheaper.

I think I got my 50mm f1.8 Canon lens for $13 bucks, including shipping.

In addition to the primes, if you can find the Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f3.5 Macro lens you will not be sorry. Got to use the macro function on "Cristo" and let me just say... wow! Make sure you get version 1 when looking to buy. It's the one with the 67mm filter size.

Good luck.

When you go for prime lenses...make sure there is no rust or mold in the lenses. I found some of mine at pawn shops and quality camera shops in their used dept.

Combos?

Combos?

I just bought the following:

Canon XHA1

Letus Flip Enhanced

Nikon 100mm f/2.8 Series E

Nikon Normal 50mm f/1.4 AIS Manual Focus Lens

...and I owned the 28mm Nikon lens.

Are these combinations going to work well? Please say yes. haha. I just spent some money.
